Sometimes, the best discoveries happen by chance. That’s what happened to us when we stumbled upon Delamar Dry Lake in Nevada. We had planned to camp at a nature reserve, but when we arrived, all the spots were taken. So, we took a chance on a long canyon road, and it led us to a dried-up lake surrounded by mountains.

The road was rough and there were no signs except for a stop sign at the junction with the main road. But we kept driving and soon enough we found ourselves in the middle of Delamar Dry Lake. The old lake bottom was flat and smooth, and perfect for walking around barefoot. It was surrounded by mountains, which made for an impressive sight.

So, what is Delamar Dry Lake, and how did it come to be like this? It’s a large playa located in Lincoln County, Nevada, covering an area of approximately 15 square miles. Playas are flat areas that were once covered by water, but due to evaporation and lack of precipitation, they have dried up. Delamar Dry Lake is no exception.

The lakebed is known for its unique geological formations, including the nearby Delamar Mountains, which contain a number of precious metal deposits. These deposits played a significant role in the history of the area, attracting prospectors during the 19th century in search of gold and silver.

My favourite part about camping here was that there were no other people around. We stayed for two nights, enjoying the solitude and the stunning scenery. It was peaceful, quiet, and perfect for relaxing. I even managed to catch a fox on my trail camera twice!

Delamar Dry Lake is not only a beautiful place to visit, but it’s also a historical one. During World War II, it was used for military training exercises, and today it’s a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts who enjoy exploring the area’s rugged terrain by vehicle or on foot.

For a unique and off-the-beaten-path destination in Nevada, Delamar Dry Lake is definitely worth checking out. It’s a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the geological and cultural history of the region, and the chance to get away from it all and enjoy the beauty of nature.
